We are lucky in Adams County, Pa., to be surrounded by farmland that produces such a variety of crops – both large and small. We may be the largest apple producing county in Pennsylvania, but our growers provide us with many small-batch crops as well – like rhubarb. Visit any of Adams County’s farmers’ markets or countryside markets in the springtime, and you’ll be sure to come across home-grown rhubarb. If you’re anything like us, it sparks your interest, but you just aren’t sure how to use it. We turned to Hollabaugh Bros. Fruit Farm and Market for a recipe ... Read This Story

One of our favorite signs of spring in Adams County is the sight of fresh produce. Strawberries are one of the first fruits to become available during the Adams County growing season and aside from eating all the fresh strawberries we can, we know that we’ll be making these Rusty’s Red passion parfaits all season long.
These parfaits combine a sweet, homemade strawberry compote – made simply with fresh strawberries, sugar and Adams County Winery’s Rusty’s Red wine. You cook the compote down until it is thick like syrup and then layer it with a dreamy, homemade chocolate mousse. We topped ... Read This Story

By Jess Clevenger – As a foodie, my favorite way to welcome a new season is, of course, through food and what better way to welcome spring than through making homemade peanut butter eggs!
I turned to the National Apple Harvest cookbook – a collection of trusted recipes from Adams County locals – and found a recipe for the most amazing peanut butter eggs. They are surprisingly easy to make and their taste is undeniably good. Creamy peanut butter is combined with butter and powdered sugar, mixed until fluffy, shaped into eggs and then frozen. Once frozen, you dip the eggs ... Read This Story

By Jess Clevenger – There are many traditions that I’ve been introduced to since moving to Adams County three years ago, and one that I can most definitely get behind is Fastnacht Day. Fastnacht Day, which translates to ‘fast night’ or ‘night before the fast,’ is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, and is big in Adams County because of the heavy Pennsylvania Dutch influence of the area. Kids get treated to fastnachts in area schools, you can find fastnachts in grocery stores and many churches make large batches of fastnachts to celebrate.
I’ve never celebrated Fastnacht Day, but decided that this would ... Read This Story

We’re celebrating fall and the beginning of the holiday season in Gettysburg, Pa., with this pear harvest bread, a recipe courtesy of one of our countryside fruit markets – Boyer Nurseries and Orchards. Warm ginger, zesty lemon, toasty walnuts, caramelly brown sugar and sweet, juicy pears are combined to make this comforting, festive bread.
These pear harvest loaves would be the perfect treat to snack on Thanksgiving morning or while you are preparing your Thanksgiving day feast. The recipe makes four small loaves of pear bread, which would be perfect for sending home with loved ones during the holidays; ... Read This Story

By Donna White – Anyone who knows me knows I love to cook, but I flat out do not bake. I love to eat baked goods, but I just haven’t mastered the art of actually baking them. I always walk by the case in Dunlap’s Restaurant in awe of the beautiful mile high meringue atop the selection of pies. I was so excited to get the opportunity to learn just how these tasty desserts are made from Shirley Marquardt, the resident baker at Dunlap’s. Not only are the pies gorgeous, they are absolutely yummy! You just gotta try one!

We have enjoyed the growing season in Adams County this past year – from asparagus to strawberries, cherries, summertime veggies, peaches and apples – it’s been a delicious year. And with fall now here, and the growing season coming to an end, we are fully embracing pumpkin season. To celebrate the season, we felt inspired to get to the kitchen to bake a tasty treat, using homegrown Adams County pumpkins. We turned to the Inns of the Gettysburg Area cookbook, where we found a fabulous recipe from the Historic Fairfield Inn 1757 for homemade pumpkin pie filling. This is a ... Read This Story

By Jess Clevenger – I’ve been an Adams County resident for two years, and from my observation, there is no dessert more authentically Adams County than apple pie. And it comes as no surprise, as Adams County is the highest apple producing county in Pennsylvania. Most locals I’ve come to know not only thoroughly enjoy eating it, but also know how to make a perfect apple pie. So I decided that after two years of living here, it was finally time that I learned to make an apple pie from scratch. Actually, I decided that it was time to make ... Read This Story

By Donna White – Catching a whiff of the fresh roasted garlic and herbs as I walked into the kitchen at The Historic Fairfield Inn, I just knew this was going to be a yummy day. Chef Johnathon was ready and waiting for us to get started with the ham and bean soup recipe that has been used at the Inn for more than 200 years.
When you start with quality, fresh ingredients and add in a wonderful chef that really cares about the product he is serving to the Inn’s guests, you know that you just can’t go wrong. The ... Read This Story

It is prime peach season in Adams County! Farms in Adams County’s countryside are harvesting bushel upon bushel of juicy, tree ripened peaches, and we are savoring each and every bite of those peaches that we get to eat.
It’s easy to enjoy farm fresh peaches in this area. Although not quite as big as the apple industry, Adams County is the highest peach producing county in Pennsylvania. You can find sweet peaches at our farmers’ markets – Gettysburg Farmers’ Market and Adams County Farmers’ Market; our countryside markets – Hollabaugh Bros. Fruit Farm and Market, the Historic Round Barn and ... Read This Story
