One of the most incredible things about Adams County, Pa., is it’s farming community. Orchards cover more than 20,000 acres of land in Adams County, and those orchards provide both stunning scenery and unbelievably delicious fruit. Lots of fruit – Adams County growers harvest 280 million pounds of apples each year, as well as countless other fruits and vegetables.
Aside from enjoying that produce fresh, it’s amazing to see those fruits and vegetables turned into mouthwatering dishes. Once fresh fruit season in Adams County begins, it seems like there is a new fruit or veggie ready to enjoy each week. We loved every moment of strawberry and rhubarb season, and now we are so excited to be enjoying fresh from the orchard cherries and plums! We made this cherry plum slump, a recipe from Boyer Nurseries and Orchards to celebrate the season.

We are lucky in Adams County, Pa., to be surrounded by farmland that produces such a variety of crops – both large and small. We may be the largest apple producing county in Pennsylvania, but our growers provide us with many small-batch crops as well – like rhubarb. Visit any of Adams County’s farmers’ markets or countryside markets in the springtime, and you’ll be sure to come across home-grown rhubarb. One of our favorite signs of spring in Adams County is the sight of fresh produce. Strawberries are one of the first fruits to become available during the Adams County growing season and aside from eating all the fresh strawberries we can, we know that we’ll be making these Rusty’s Red passion parfaits all season long.

I turned to the National Apple Harvest cookbook – a collection of trusted recipes from Adams County locals – and found a recipe for the most amazing peanut butter eggs. Irish pride is everywhere in Gettysburg, including the hallowed grounds of the Civil War battlefield where the famous Irish Brigade heroically charged across the Wheatfield and secured the Union line on July 2, 1863.
Tucked into the woods along Gettysburg National Military Park’s Sickle’s Avenue stands tall a Celtic cross, shadowing the Irish Wolfhound. The monument represents the valor of five regiments who, battered and beaten from engagements months prior in Antietam and Fredericksburg, triumphantly secured the Union line as part of Sickle’s army who just hours earlier pushed west toward Emmitsburg Road.

By Jess Clevenger – There are many traditions that I’ve been introduced to since moving to Adams County three years ago, and one that I can most definitely get behind is Fastnacht Day. Fastnacht Day, which translates to ‘fast night’ or ‘night before the fast,’ is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, and is big in Adams County because of the heavy Pennsylvania Dutch influence of the area. Kids get treated to fastnachts in area schools, you can find fastnachts in grocery stores and many churches make large batches of fastnachts to celebrate.

I love hearing stories about traditions and customs of past generations and places, especially those associated with apple orchards. Apple orchard wassailing seemingly originated in cider-producing areas of England. Sometime in the winter months, most often in mid-January, a group of people would travel from orchard to orchard with their wassail punch.
